Mark 11:1-11
Day 2
Day 2
With this request, Jesus established that He would enter Jerusalem riding on a colt. He intentionally chose a young animal (non threatening). In Jesus’ day, to come riding a colt, rather than a mighty stallion was to reveal yourself as a ‘man of peace’. Jesus didn’t present Himself to Jerusalem as a warrior, but as a suffering servant. There were several interpretations concerning how the Messiah would enter His Kingdom. (Read Daniel 7:13 & Zechariah 9:9) Some thought He would enter powerfully, others thought lowly. A few Rabbis reconciled these differences by teaching that the Messiah would come humbly to an unworthy Israel, but powerfully if Israel were worthy. In this day, Israel considered itself worthy; they only looked for a Warrior-Messiah. What do you think this emphasizes to the disciples about strength in His kingdom? They keep arguing about who is best and Jesus rides in on a baby animal.
