Blaine Rogers @Mark 11:15-19 Day 2 In this passage see Jesus asserting His royal authority again. There is a righteousness and appropriateness in His anger. What caused Jesus to respond in such a violent way? Notice His words very carefully. “And as he taught them, he said, “Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’ Jesus quotes two Old Testament prophecies and He brings them together; Isaiah 56:7 and Jeremiah 7:11. In doing this He gives us a good idea of His expectations and intention of the Temple – a house of prayer; the other descriptive of what the Temple had become – a den of robbers. The house that was supposed to be a house of prayer had become a den of thieves. This was especially true in the outer court, which is where the merchants had set up shop. This area was called the Court of the Gentiles. This was the area that God ordained as the place non-Jews could worship Him. What was it that angered Jesus so much? Was it the commercialism? The corruption? Or something else? Share this post…
