Day 2 Sacrifice is something we do for another, regardless of personal cost or ability. I want to tell you about the sacrifice of Maximillian Kolbe, the Franciscan priest. In February of 1941, Kolbe was incarcerated at Auschwitz. His mother was Polish/Father was German. He had hidden more than 2,000 Jews from arrest. However, he was finally caught. In the harshness of the slaughterhouse he maintained the gentleness of Christ. He shared his food. He gave up his bed. He prayed for his captors and encouraged his cellmates. He was soon given the nickname 'Saint of Auschwitz.' But those acts are not what we remember most. In July of 1941, after 3 successful escapes from other men incarcerated, the guards wanted to make a point. They would starve 10 men to serve as motivation for the rest. When one man heard his name called he cried out, ‘my wife, my children’…hearing the man cry out he voluntarily took his place. After 2 weeks of dehydration and starvation, only Kolbe remained in the torture chamber alive. Finally, he was given a lethal injection to end his life. The ultimate sacrifice: giving of one’s life for another. In one way, such sacrifices are heroic and legendary and make for great stories of inspiration. But what kind of sacrifice does God expect from us? He has already paid the ultimate sacrifice for us… So what must we give to sacrifice to God? Share!
